Churches route

The Route through the churches of Antequera offers us the opportunity of seeing part of the treasures of our town at the same time as we learn something about its culture.

Antequera is the town with more churches per habitant, with a total of 33 churches. As the town is in a crossroads it become a point of interest for many religious orders which, after the Conquest, decided to settle down here. That is one of the reasons of our great historical heritage.

Expert agree when pointing out some of the religious jewels of our town, such as the church of the Monastery of San Zoilo, the oldest one of the town, and the El Carmen church as an example of the Andalucía Baroque style.

Through this route, you will visit 10 churches that keep the religiosity for which they were constructed centuries ago; besides, they treasure art in several artistic styles, being considered as real living museums:

CUC, Unicaja Culture Centre

An educational centre and a dynamization cultural factor of the environment; an open space with a diverse exhibitions programme in the several expressions of fine arts, music, theatre and dance. It is in one of the most emblematic buildings of the town and it has an Exhibition Room, a Multiuse Room and an area devoted to educational workshops.

Edificio archivo histórico Antequera

Antequera Municipal Archive

The Collections of the Municipal Historical Archive of Antequera are in the building of the former Depot of the Town. It is a construction placed in the so named Cuesta de Barbacana whose façade also overlooks the Nájera street. The floor is in “L” form, with a useful area of 816.23 square meters which are separated into three large perfectly defined spaces:

The Large Warehouse: it is the spaced aimed to hold the main volume of collections. It is a mix installation with conventional and compact shelves.
The Bread-bin. In this room with wooden shelves, it is mainly held the collections of ecclesiastical origin and the municipal town hall minutes. In addition, there are display cases with significant documents of the Antequera town.

The Major-domo House. This is the area for the administrative services and the ample researchers’ room.
The perfect internal organization of the whole facilitates its operation and guarantees the best maintenance of the collections. It is one of the building-archive more modern in Andalucía.

Antequera Exhibition Centre FIAP

This exhibition centre of the International Federation of Photography Art is placed in the building Casa de la Cultura which belongs to the Antequera Town Hall. The Photography Spanish Confederation proposed the Antequera Photography Group as the FIAP Exhibition Centre because the quality and beauty of the Room, the significant exhibition activity hold over the years and, above all, because our town has been supporting photography since many years ago.

This space gives Antequera the possibility of holding the best international photography exhibitions by showing the work of great international photographers, besides the possibility of counting on the presence of national photographers.

MAD Museum of Art of the Provincial Council of Málaga

The Museo de Arte de la Diputación is placed in the Casa Museo de Los Colarte. The building, which was built at the end of the 18th century by Mr Juan Manuel de Colarte y Lila, is purely in Mannerist style with Muslim reminiscences. It has exterior patios to hold cultural activities, mainly music, gastronomic, etc., events.

The Casa Museo de los Colarte is a space created to promote and reflect about art.

The exhibitions are organized in two scopes: a permanent exhibition aiming to add value the artistic collection of the Málaga Council and the very own building based on its architectonical and historical singularity and temporary exhibitions.

MVCA, MVUSEUM Of The Antequera Town

It is right in the centre of the town: the main façade and main entries face the Plaza del Coso Viejo square.

The “Museum of the Antequera Town” is formed by the former Palacio de Nájera and two new adjoining buildings, which makes a total of over five thousand square meters; half of them are devoted to exhibition rooms. It has become one of the most important museums in the Andalucía region on a municipal scale.

Inside, there are 20 rooms where several collections are displayed: from the very own symbols of the town, archaeological remains and sites, to modern paintings.

It is important to point out that if you are travelling with your pet, the MVCA is a Pet Friendly Municipal facility.

Plaza de la Ermita de la Veracruz Antequera

The Ermita de la Veracruz Hermitage crowns one of the highest parts of the town. There are two viewpoint areas in its square where you will enjoy a really spectacular views of the town and of the fertile Vega (lowland) of Antequera. In addition, the road to the Plaza de la Ermita is beautifully lighted with turns the visit during the sunset into a very pleasant walk.
